As Ann has pointed out, there is a great site cataloging memes called Know Your Meme, but there are also a number of sites where you can go in and make your own memes. One of these is Quickmeme.
Quickmeme is a place where there are premade images that you can go in and edit with your own captions. As you will see pretty soon, it is pretty easy to do.
I just made that.
Some of the meme entries would probably go over the heads of many younger students so I probably would not use the site with elementary students. Also, I probably would not use the site in school, in part because I could see students easily goofing off with it. I do think it would be great for a homework or extra credit activity. I could even see having a "best meme" contest for content area classes on a specific text or topic.
I just made that, too.
You can sign up for Quickmeme, though you do not have to. Mostly I did so I could easy find and download my work there. I could not save images immediately from their website once I made them anonymously, so I opened an account so all my images were saved in a group.
The pros of this site are that it is pretty easy to use, quick for making, finding and sharing images, and it is funny. There is a constant "best of" queue on the front page of the site, and you can sort through individual images to see all the entries there are.
The cons are that the content can be "adult." I am using quotation marks because most of the humor is quite juvenile, though there are things like casual drinking and smoking that are probably best not connected to instruction as routine practices with younger people who are not of legal age for such activity. Some adult supervision seems required.
I just... Aw, you get the picture.
Because the pictures themselves are basically empty canvases, I could see lots of content connections. These memes could show up in all kinds of classes, such as:
Algebra
English Literature
Government/Social Studies
Chemistry
Spanish/Foreign Language
In case you have not noticed, making these memes can be addictive. Go try out Quickmeme yourself!
Just so you know, I am highly upset with you about this post. Memes are not just pictures meant to be captioned. As a matter of fact, in the meme world, you would be viciously attacked for what you have just done. This is an affront to meme culture. Notice I said culture. We do not just take pictures and caption them. There are running themes through each meme. I shall now dissect your memes one by one.
ReplyDeleteSuccess Kid: This is meme is meant to communicate the ability to achieve "impossible" things. Thus, the meme should read "Never made a meme before...make front page". Making the front page means that the meme was so awesome that it is on the home page of a meme site. Hence, success.
Good Guy Greg: He does things for people that no one else would actually do or that are just awesomely good, even if it means sacrificing himself. Thus, the meme should read "Makes meme for classroom use...appropriate for elementary school kids". Then, you would Photoshop out the joint.
Overly Attached Girlfriend: She is a recent addition to the meme world after she put out a creepy video on YouTube with altered lyrics to Justin Bieber's song "Boyfriend". Thus, the meme should read "Boyfriend makes memes on Internet...checks the profiles of girls who commented on meme".
The Most Interesting Man in the World: This meme is to show accidental awesomeness. Thus, the meme should read "I don't always find X...but when I do, I find Y, too".
Philsoraptor: This meme questions the true paradoxes in the world. Thus, this meme should read "If one ponders to be or not to be, if they are not to be, can they answer the question?"
Scumbag Steve: One word - douchebaggery. Thus, this meme should read "Amendment 1 gives him right to free speech...uses right to complain about marijuana laws".
One Does Not Simply Walk Into Mordor: I give you credit for this one, as you have done it correctly, but only for this one.
First World Problems: This meme is self-explanatory. These are ironic problems found only in first world countries. While you have presented an ironic problem, it is not limited to the first world. Most of these memes have to do with technology. Thus, the meme should read "Went to the bathroom...forget my iPhone" or "Fui al bano y se olvido de traer el iPhone".
Business Cat: This meme imagines what it would be like if cats worked for corporations. It follows the pattern of something a boss does, then something a cat would do. Thus, the meme should read "Get those reports to me ASAP...paws at fish screensaver".
I think I should be exempted from writing a reflection on Chapter 9...just saying :)
I fully expect to be arrested by the meme police for my crappy captioning. I did play fast and loose with the meme trends here, 'tis true.
ReplyDeleteRules are meant to be bent and broken with this kind of thing though, yes?
Your response is a reflection in and of itself. :p
